SPACE framework

Definition
The SPACE framework is a multidimensional approach to understanding developer productivity across Satisfaction and well-being, Performance, Activity, Communication and collaboration, and Efficiency and flow.
Five dimensions, one conversation
The framework resists the idea that one metric can represent developer productivity. Satisfaction and well-being describe the developer experience. Performance considers outcomes and effectiveness. Activity covers what people do. Communication and collaboration capture how work moves between people. Efficiency and flow describe the ease of progressing through the system.
The dimensions overlap, but they are not interchangeable. A rise in activity can accompany lower efficiency if more work is being started and less is being finished.
Measure the question you have
An illustrative team wants to understand why delivery is slowing. It can examine review waiting time and completed changes, then ask developers about interruptions and unclear ownership. Those sources illuminate different dimensions of the same problem.
Avoid collecting a score for every dimension simply because the framework lists them. Choose measures that relate to a decision. Define the population, time window, and interpretation before collecting a baseline.
Keep the human context
SPACE does not turn people into comparable production units. A high activity count may reflect support work or a fragmented process. A lower count may reflect architecture work, mentoring, or a difficult investigation.
Use the framework to broaden the evidence used in engineering conversations. Protect privacy, share definitions, and give teams a chance to explain what the measurements leave out. The goal is better working conditions and outcomes, not a more elaborate ranking system.
