Definition
Platform adoption is the extent to which the intended software teams use an internal developer platform or one of its capabilities in their regular work. Adoption includes usage and continued use, but meaningful evaluation also asks whether the platform improves the outcomes it was built to support.
Usage is an early signal
A team may adopt a platform because it is required, because it is convenient, or because it solves a real problem. A count of provisioned services or active users cannot distinguish those reasons. It also cannot show whether the platform reduced work or simply created another interface around the same work.
Define adoption for the capability being evaluated. It may mean using a service template, deploying through a supported workflow, obtaining an environment without a ticket, or continuing to use a platform after the first trial. Keep the denominator visible and segment by team, service type, and maturity.
Connect adoption with outcomes
Pair usage with time to complete the supported task, success and retry rates, support demand, developer feedback, delivery flow, quality, and reliability. Compare adopters with a relevant earlier period or similar team. A platform may improve setup time while its deployment path still creates a queue.
