Forecast horizon

Definition
A forecast horizon is the interval into the future for which a delivery prediction is intended to be useful. Its length depends on historical variation, work definition, system change, and the decision being supported.
Forecasts fade with distance
Near-term work often has clearer scope and fewer unknown dependencies. Farther-out work is more exposed to reprioritization, discovery, staffing changes, and system events. A forecast horizon names where the evidence stops being useful enough for the decision.
A concrete example
An illustrative team can forecast the next three ready items using item-level history. It can discuss a quarter's broad capacity range, but it should not present the exact date of the tenth future item as equally reliable. The two views support different decisions.
Choose the horizon intentionally
Match it to the question: staffing may need a longer range, while release sequencing may need a shorter one. State the work class and historical window. Refresh the forecast as completed items provide new evidence.
Limitations
There is no universal horizon measured in weeks or months. A stable maintenance queue may support a longer one than a research project. Do not extend a forecast merely to satisfy a planning format.
