Most companies in the AI transition won't be replaced. They'll be quietly routed around. Agents pick the path of least friction, and companies that haven't restructured for that future become brokers between buyers and sellers who never needed them. That's the work that compounds, the non-optimal layer AI can't commoditize. Holding it open is most of the job. I'm CTO at billups, where I've spent twelve years building toward this. Underneath the work: 28 granted-and-pending patents in AI, computer sensing, and media measurement. Previously I co-founded several healthcare ML startups, scaled a payments company, worked in a robotics group, and learned that org design isn't a deck, it's how a company survives a phase shift. I write about org design for the agent era, durable-vs-commodity skills, and why human judgment becomes more valuable, not less, when agents arrive.
