Medical device development is tough. To get a device cleared by 510(k), it has to be “substantially equivalent,” but for it to be a successful new product with patent protection, etc. it needs to include unique features or functionality. This is especially true with devices including absorbable components, which degrade and absorb into the body after implantation. Over the last 12 years, I have been a part of and led teams to develop unique medical devices by incorporating the right materials with the right processes. My teams have helped develop more than 10 medical devices into FDA and CE cleared products, all of which are still being sold today. I have worked with implantable products in orthopedic, soft tissue, ocular, and vascular specialties and primarily contribute to applications of absorbable polymers and downstream processing.
