I find the real problem, then build the simplest system that solves it. I’m a digital media engineer. On a given project that means I’m the developer, the designer, the systems architect, and the person who gets handed the thing nobody else wants to own. The title on the door changes — CTO, VP of Marketing, professor — and the work underneath it stays the same. Recent work: Gate — warehouse check-in on the driver’s phone. Data entry per load: 3–5 min → none. Wrong-number retries: 3 → 0. About 90 minutes a day back. Four warehouses, ten minutes of training. Vanguard — bonded freight status that can’t drift. Discrepancies: 23% → 0. Year-end reporting: days or weeks → under 3 minutes per warehouse. Relay — the customer emails nobody has to write. 2–3 hours a day back per market, across four markets. Missed sends: zero. DePuy Synthes / Johnson & Johnson — offline iOS apps for hundreds of thousands of surgical documents, first download under 5MB. Fifteen-plus years in production in North America and Europe. Also: Rollcall (QR attendance; instructor time 5–10 min → 0), food-safety docs that replaced a 1,000-page binder and now get maintained by the coordinator, not me, and Whitney Lab modules that turned a field trip into something teachers could run anywhere. How I work: diagnose first. Use tools I already know well — TypeScript, SvelteKit, React, PHP, MySQL, Supabase, Cloudflare Workers. Automate the boring part and leave judgment to people. If it takes more than ten minutes to learn, it’s the wrong tool. Software only I can maintain is a liability I handed someone, not a system I delivered.
