The first thing I ever took apart was an old toaster, yellowing plastic front, scuffed stainless steel sides, and a scattering of burnt-on crumbs. It wasn’t exciting technology, just a simple circuit. But when it stopped working, I opened it, learned how it worked, fixed it, and felt a surge of accomplishment that outshone the toast it produced.
