It always seems Impossible until it’s done “It always seems impossible until it’s done”. I’ve lived these words by Nelson Mandela repeatedly throughout my career in the high-tech industry. In this rapid-change industry, you are constantly faced with forces that threaten to disrupt your business. To stay ahead, it is necessary for a company to explore opportunities beyond its core business and evolve. For an established company this is often an uncomfortable journey, with investment risk, knowledge gaps, cultural barriers, and fear of disruption and change. It can seem impossible, but the alternative to not taking-on the mission can be catastrophic. My first experience with this paradox was early in my career, when I worked at Silicon Graphics. The company was a celebrated industry leader in Silicon Valley, but they failed to see the potential of emerging PC graphics cards, which disrupted their market, and ultimately led to their downfall. Since then I’ve always gravitated towards the impossible mission, pushing the boundaries, paving the way, and by doing so I’ve been fortunate enough to lead both small and large scale transformations of impact. Embrace the impossible, and enjoy the ride, as there is no greater feeling than proving it can be done. Music and Engineering I started programming computers at 13. I started playing guitar at 17. It’s interesting how many people I know in engineering who also play an instrument. It says a lot about how their brain works, where they are both artistic (right side) and analytical (left side), with uniform application of each. Those who do neither do not realize a) how creative programming is, or b) how structured music is. More recently I’ve been exploring the recording and mixing side of music, which is blend of creativity, technology, techniques, and problem solving. A song and how it’s made is an audio puzzle - perfect for my brain.
