I lead technology at a 100+ branch mortgage lender. Everyone in our industry is racing to figure out AI in regulated lending. The interesting work isn’t whether it can be done — it’s whether what gets shipped will survive the first time a regulator asks why a decision was made. Seven years ago I joined Revolution Mortgage as its only developer. Today I lead engineering, data, business intelligence, intelligent automation, information technology and project services for one of the fastest-growing lenders in the country. What I learned scaling both the tech and the team: they’re the same discipline applied at different layers. You debug an organization the way you debug a system. Most technology leaders are getting AI wrong. They bolt it onto legacy systems and ask LLMs to make decisions they have no business making. The result is fragile, unauditable, and one regulator letter from breaking. I build for the opposite — AI that’s auditable, explainable, and accountable to a human for any consequential decision. Architectures change every quarter. Principles don’t. The other thing most leaders get wrong: they optimize their systems and ignore their own operating system. I apply the same engineering rigor to human performance that I bring to software — structured protocols for nutrition, cognition, and physical output, tracked and iterated like any other system.
