One of my passions is rock climbing. In climbing, there is a term we use called "beta". Beta is information on how to climb a route (how to hold onto an edge, where to place your protection, where to put your feet). The thing I love about climbing is that a move can feel impossible without the right beta. You can try something over and over, hundreds of times, and fail. And then, with one little tweak of the toe placement or one little shift in body weight, you can do that same move. And it feels effortless!! There are many parallels between our jobs and climbing. Our jobs can be tedious, hard, and near impossible without the right beta. That's why the goal in my career has always been to "find better beta". In high school, instead of memorizing complex formulas, I would program my TI-83 calculator to do it for me. During my first internship and through the early part of my career I would automate most of my job. I got so good at it that I got a job automating everyone else's job. Today I lead a software development organization and while I leave most of the coding to the devs, I still get to focus on my passion, building product that makes customer's lives easier.
