I have designed, built, and run many award-winning, large-scale, mission-critical, globally distributed software systems, having served as CIO, CTO, and Chief Architect at companies in various industries. For 5 years, I was an invited guest Lecturer in two graduate courses at Harvard where my book Technology Strategy Patterns was part of the required reading. I'm the author of several other technology books, including the world's first book on Cassandra distributed database, Cassandra: The Definitive Guide (3 editions), Semantic Software Design, Java SOA Cookbook, and as a contributor to 97 Things Every Software Architect Should Know. My work has been translated into Chinese, Japanese and Persian. I play guitar and write for the band Two Whatevers, which has recorded at Island Studio Chicago and had albums released through Universal / Mi5. I am a Presidential Scholar in the Arts, have performed at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC, and had a original full-length play produced in New York City.
