I am an experimental physicist with nearly 46 years of research experience, much of it at Los Alamos National Laboratory. My work focuses on using acoustics and other wave-based methods — including optics, RF, microwave, and X-ray techniques — to see, sense, characterize, and manipulate matter in new ways. My specialty is translating ideas from basic science into practical, marketable products. Over the course of my career, I have developed techniques and technologies that can noninvasively identify and characterize chemicals, monitor oil wells, and detect objects using acoustic sensors. My work has led to more than 72 U.S. patents and over 252 international patents, with 15+ additional patents pending. These inventions have been licensed more than 24 times to leading companies in the energy, sensors, and biomedical sectors, including GE and Chevron. They have also earned five R&D 100 Awards, LANL’s Richard P. Feynman Innovation Prize, and coverage in Scientific American, The New York Times, R&D Magazine, and other publications. In addition, I have authored more than 165 peer-reviewed journal articles across a wide range of fields.
