I've been a full-stack engineer for over a decade within fintech and healthtech startups (from Seed to Series C) following my 15-year career in graphic and web design. Although my primary responsibility was to put together frontend tech stacks and contribute to backend APIs, being part of early startups generally meant I had to wear multiple hats. I've also had to take on devops and cybersecurity responsibilities in AWS (and more recently Azure), setting up network, compute, storage and security resources, as well take ownership of defect monitoring through Sentry. I would be the technical arm of product ownership while working with product managers, such as explaining the technical nuances of Marqeta card issuance, Yodlee financial data aggregation, or KYC onboarding flow using IDscan and watchlist providers. I steered the engineering culture towards technical excellence as the company hired more engineers by grooming engineers towards CI/CD best practices and implementing stricter code review processes to produce higher quality code and tests. I took ownership of technical support from overseeing triage, setting up escalation rules and incident response plans, and overseeing defects and feature requests during roadmap discussions. I guess that makes me a kind of jack-of-all-trades, but it stems from a desire to solve systemic problems that cause the workplace to feel demotivating. Engineering is a team sport!
